Mavs fall 5-2 in eight innings at SLC Tournament

SAN MARCOS, Texas - Nicholls State scored three runs in the eighth inning to win 5-2 over UT Arlington in the semifinal game of the Southland Conference Softball Tournament, Friday . The loss concludes the season for the Mavericks.

With the win, Nicholls State improves to 31-27 and will await the winner of No. 1 Texas State/No. 4 Stephen F. Austin at 4 p.m., tomorrow in the championship game. UTA ends its season at 27-22.

Kat Harrell put Nicholls State on the board in the top of the first. She walked to leadoff the game, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. An RBI groundout by Danielle Clayton scored Harrell from third, to give the Colonels the 1-0 lead.

UTA came back to tie the game at 1-1 in the second, on a RBI single up the middle from Katie Jones to score freshman Whitney Simpson from second.

The Colonels retook the lead in the fourth on a solo home run by Audrey Wood down the left field line, making the score 2-1.

The Mavericks tied the game again in the sixth on a solo home run to left center by Amanda Swofford. In the top of the eighth, the Colonels scored three to put the game out of reach. Harrell homered to right center with one out, before Clayton plated Kodi Butler with a RBI single up the middle. The game's final run came on an error by UTA off the bat of Nicole Smith.

Wood (8-6) worked the final 2.1 innings to get the win, allowing three hits. Lacey Gros threw the first 5.2 innings, allowing four hits and two runs, striking out three.

Sophomore Cara Hulme (16-7) went the distance for the Mavericks, allowing six hits and five runs, while striking out eight.

Simpson and Swofford led the Mavs at the plate, both going 2-for-4 and scoring a run. Swofford added an RBI and her team leading 12th home run of the season
