HUNTSVILLE, Texas - UT Arlington softball advances at the SLC Tournament in Huntsville with a 7-2 win over Nicholls State on Thursday. The Mavs improve to 35-14 on the season while the Colonels fall to 26-27. Catcher Amanda Brown led the Mavs on the day going 2-for-3 with a run and four RBI.
Brown started the day by giving UTA the early 4-0 lead on a two-out grand slam over the left center field fence in the bottom of the first.
In the bottom of the second, right fielder Kristin Moore started the inning with a triple to the left center field fence and scored on a passed ball to give the Mavs a five-point advantage. Left fielder Katie Jones reached on a walk and scored on Dee Jay Nelson's 13th home run of the season over the scoreboard in left field.
Nicholls threatened to score in the top of the fourth with the bases loaded and two outs when Jacqueline Pacheco grounded out to Brittany Stevens at second base to end the inning.
The Mavs had the opportunity to end the game early in the bottom of the fifth with the bases loaded and one out when third baseman Courtney Anderson grounded into a double play to end the inning.
The Colonels finally jumped on the board in the top of the seventh, but could not overcome the Mavs five run lead.
Junior Laura Jones (15-4) took the win for the Mavs with five strikeouts, three walks and four hits in seven innings on the mound. Jessica Barksdale (6-8) took the loss in 1.2 innings on the mounds giving up all seven runs on three hits.
The Mavs will face the loser of game three, which is a match-up between the third seed Texas State and fourth seed UT San Antonio at 11 a.m. on Friday.
