RUSTON, Louisiana - After an overnight weather delay, the Mavericks resumed play to complete a 2-0 victory over the UTSA Roadrunners Friday morning.
"I think the girls game out and played their game, and focused on UTA softball and we came out on top," UT Arlington coach Kristie Fox said.
Freshman Britnea Barilli went 1-for-3 and scored both runs for UT Arlington, while Nina Villanueva picked up two hits in three at-bats with an RBI. Teri Lyles allowed just three hits by the Roadrunners to go along with four strikeouts.
Barilli got things started with a leadoff standup double to start the ballgame. Kallan Thompson bunted to advance Barilli to third and crossed the plate on a throwing error to give the Mavs the 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
In the top of the sixth, Barilli lead with a walk and advanced the second on a sacrifice bunt by Thompson. Villanueva doubled to deep right-center, scoring Barilli to give the Mavericks the 2-0 lead.
A storm rolled into Ruston at the end of the sixth inning and the game was postponed for the rest of the day. It resumed Friday morning at 10 a.m. to complete the final inning.
UTSA's Jolene Graham walked to start the bottom of the seventh, the next batter struck out and UTA ended the game with a double play.
The Mavericks are back in action Friday afternoon at 4:30 as they face Texas State.
