HUNTSVILLE, Texas - UT Arlington eliminated UT San Antonio 6-2 in the seventh game of the Southland Conference Tournament. The Mavs advance to day three of the tournament where they will face an unbeaten Sam Houston State team at 11 a.m.
The Mavs used four doubles in the first inning to eliminate the Roadrunners from the tournament. With the win, UTA improves its record to 36-15 while UTSA drops to 27-31.
Shortstop Amanda Swofford started the game with a one out double to plate April Clougherty and Dee Jay Nelson to give UTA the early 2-0 lead. The next batter, Amanda Brown hit a double down the left field line to score Swofford and drive the Mavs lead to three. Right fielder Kristin Moore added the third double of the inning to score designated player Samantha Chumchal who reached on a singled and Brown. Third baseman Courtney Anderson hit a double of her own to drive in Moore for the 6-0 Maverick lead.
In the top of the third inning, Jessica Rogers hit a two-RBI home run to cut the Mavs lead to four (6-2). But, the Runners would get no closer.
Moore led the Mavs on the day going 2-for-2 with two RBI and one run scored.
Janeille Nickels (13-13) gave up six runs in less then one inning on the mound to take the loss for UTSA. Freshman Cara Hulme (7-6) took the win in 4.2 innings in the circle after giving up no runs on two hits with five strikeouts.
UTA with one loss will face the unbeaten Sam Houston State Bearkats at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
