ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington softball opened its 2013 Fall season against Vernon College with a pair of victories last week.
The Mavericks defeated VC 9-7 in the first game and shut out the Lady Chaps 12-0 in the second.
"The fall games are an opportunity where everyone gets a chance to show what they can do," UT Arlington coach Kristie Fox said. "We have quite a few people competing very hard for starting positions."
Senior Callie Collins is the only returning pitcher for the Mavericks and coach Fox has been pleased with her performance so far.
"I am really happy with what I see in our senior pitcher Callie Collins, and we have three more pitchers working very hard on getting better," Fox said. "They all had a good outing we had only one inning (seventh) in the first game where we got sloppy in the circle and defensively, and gave up seven runs."
Sophomores Rebecca Stokes and Jolene Schaefer showed promise in their offensive game driving in runs. Stokes hit a grand slam in the second game to assist the Mavs in thier 20 runs through 12 innings.
"This team is a talented group that works hard," Fox said. "It will be difficult to decide who the starting nine are every day and to me that is a good problem to have."
UTA hosts North Central Texas College Wednesday at Allan Saxe Field for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
