ARLINGTON, Texas – The UTA softball team traveled to the UT Dallas on Saturday to take part in a fall doubleheader where they faced Midwestern State and UT Dallas.
Defense was key in the 5-1 opening victory as Midwestern was kept scoreless through four solid innings from the Mavericks pitching staff of Joanna Valencia and Michal Hylton. Both made quite the outing in only their second start as a Mavericks. With the solid performance from the mound, the Mavs were able to strike first from a pair of walks that brought in Laura Curry, giving them a 1-0 lead in the third.
Hylton allowed her first earned run of the fall when MSU scored on a pair of hits in the fifth, bringing the score to a tie at 1-1. The score remained tied until the Maverick offense opened up and let the bats break free. UTA rallied in the sixth to a 5-1 lead after Reagan Wright doubled to center and allowed some breathing room for the Mavericks.
With the lead in its hands, UTA came into the seventh with home advantage and Hylton back out to pitch. Midwestern gave UTA two quick outs and a strikeout to finalize the victory.
UTA then took on UT Dallas in the night cap where the Mavs won 10-4 on 12 hits, finishing perfect on the day to push the fall exhibition record to 3-0.
The Mavs enjoy a brief break in play before they resume action on Oct. 17 (2:30 p.m.) against Vernon College and Nov. 21 vs. Tarleton State (12 p.m.). Both matchups at Allan Saxe Field are free admission.
