SB: Mavs begin practice, ready for 2014 season
Jan. 13, 2014
ARLINGTON, Texas – The UT Arlington softball team started practice Sunday in preparation for the 2014 season.
The Mavericks open the season on the road Feb. 7 at the Red Dirt Classic in St. George, Utah before returning home to host two tournaments.
The team hit the field Sunday after returning from a long break and was excited to be back.
"We told them that we wouldn't have a lot of time once we got back to prepare for our first game so they needed to focus on staying in shape, keeping their arms ready to go and hitting on their own," UT Arlington coach Kristie Fox said. "I think they did all that. They had good energy at practice and seemed excited to play the games."
The offense has not seen live pitching since before the break, and the batter and pitchers worked hard to be ready for the start of team practices.
"Over the break I try to pitch every day or at least do spins or long toss," senior pitcher Callie Collins said. "I work on my counts and spots I need to hit."
The Maverick Invitation is Feb. 14-16 and features South Dakota State, Missouri State and Central Michigan. UTA hosts its second tournament, the UTA Hilton Invitational featuring five teams, starting Feb. 20 with the championship game Feb. 23.
Following the home tournaments, UTA heads to Arizona, Texas Tech and San Diego State to complete its non-conference games.
UTA enters its first season in the Sun Belt Conference at home against South Alabama on March 22.
The Sun Belt season ends with the conference tournament May 7-10 at Alfred and Helen Lamson Park.
