ARLINGTON, Texas - The UT Arlington softball team, who lost to UTSA in the 2006 SLC Conference Tournament Championship Game, received one first-place vote and placed third in both the head coaches and sport information directors polls, the league announced Thursday.
Texas-San Antonio, the winner of the past two regular-season Southland Conference titles and the defending SLC tournament champions, was tabbed as the preseason favorite in both polls. Texas State, who finished second in league play last year, finished second in both polls, receiving two first-place votes in the coaches' poll and one in the sports information poll.
Senior designated player Courtni Anderson (Mesquite, Texas), was one of four players to receive preseason honors as she was named to the preseason all-SLC first team. The 2006 first-team All-SLC honoree hit .318 last season and led the Mavs with 377 putouts.
Joining Anderson on the preseason first-team is junior outfielder Katie Jones (Cedar Hills, Texas). Jones led the Mavs and finished No. 8 in the league with a .352 batting average.
Two players from UTA were named to the second-team, senior first baseman Dee Jay Nelson (Pasadena, Texas), who hit .320 last season and led the team with 36 RBI and eight homeruns, and junior pitcher Laura Jones (Rogue River, Ore.), who finished with an 11-7 record and 2.13 ERA, tossing 16 complete games and four shutouts.
The Mavs will open up the 2007 season at the University of Houston-Wilson/DeMarini Invitational on February 9. UTA's first game is set for 11 a.m. against the University of Michigan.
