ARLINGTON, Texas - The UT Arlington softball infield will consist of two returners and three newcomers to the program as the team kicks off their 2013 season in Orlando, Fla. at the UCF Holiday Inn Select Tournament on Feb. 15.
Returning to the diamond for the Mavericks is senior Kallan Thompson and sophomore Meagan Michele. UTA welcomes freshmen Rebecca Stokes and Holly Murphree, as well as sophomore transfer Nina Villanueva to the infield group.
Stokes will be handling the duties over at the first base.
"Becca has made the transition from left field to first base for our team this season," UT Arlington head softball coach Kristie Fox said. "I know that she will contribute good, solid contact at the plate."
Splitting time at second base will be Thompson and Murphree.
"Kallan and Holly will both be getting time in at second base this year depending on who is pitching," Fox said. "They have worked hard learning the position and we expect solid defense from them both."
Sophomore transfer Villanueva will take over the shortstop position.
"Nina has really proven she is one of our most versitile players. We brought her here as a first basemen, but she has earned the role at shortstop," Fox said. "We expect to see her continue to grow as a leader on the infield."
Rounding out the UTA diamond will be Michele at third base.
"Meagan has had a long fall making adjustments to her swing," Fox said. "We are looking for her to have a solid year at the plate and on the field."
UT Arlington will open the UCF Holiday Inn Select Tournament against Buffalo at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 15. For the complete 2013 softball schedule, please click here.
