ARLINGTON, Texas - The UT Arlington softball team will bring back the experience of four returners in the role of pitchers and catchers as well as two newcomers. The team kicks off its 2013 season in Orlando, Fla. at the UCF Holiday Inn Select Tournament on Feb. 15.
Junior pitcher Callie Collins will join forces with senior and preseason All-WAC member Teri Lyles on the mound. Freshman Brittany May will also see time pitching for the Mavs. Senior Lauren Siple and junior Rachel Forshaw will take over duties behind the plate for the Mavericks. Freshman Kara Tilton will gain experience as a catcher this season as well.
Collins won seven games last season and had a 3.28 ERA. In 128 innings pitched, she held batters to a .269 average.
Lyles, a member of the All-Southland Conference team in 2012, won eight games and had a 2.21 ERA. Lyles also batted .241 last season with 20 hits and one home run.
"Our pitchers are tough cookies. They want to go out there and beat everyone they face," UT Arlington coach Kristie Fox said. "These two have taken on a huge role. They know exactly how this goes and have done it for two or three years."
Siple will be taking on a larger role this season as a senior. She played in two games last year for the Mavs.
In 16 starts last season, Forshaw hit .216 with four doubles. She recorded 67 put-outs and 10 assists for a .939 fielding percentage.
UT Arlington will open the UCF Holiday Inn Select Tournament against Buffalo at 8:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 15. For the complete 2013 softball schedule, please click here.
