SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Tulsa enters Friday's match up against the Mavericks with a 2-3 overall record... Lauren Lindsay leads the team with a .667 average, recording 10 hits in 15 plate appearances... on the mound, Jordan Kinard and Kalynn Schrock each picked up a win for the Golden Hurricane... as a team, Tulsa is batting .315... they picked up wins against Idaho State and Utah State.
Following the Mavericks opening game against Tulsa, they will face UTEP at 12:30... the Miners are 2-3... Camilla Carrera leads the team at the plate with a .786 average... in 14 at-bats, she has recorded 11 hits, including two home runs... Stacie Townsend is 2-2 on the hill with a 3.90 ERA.
Wichita State -
The Shockers are 1-1 overall, their lone victory game against Memphis (Feb.13)... offensively, Kersti Rowan leads the team with a .500 average... Jamie Hull is 1-0 on the mound.
Central Arkansas -
UCA owns a 3-2 overall mark... they have won their last three games... they recorded wins over Samford (5-4), and two wins over Arkansas-Pine Bluff (4-1, 9-0)... Kelsie Armstrong has a 2-1 record on the mound... Candice Gauntt leads the team in batting with a .462 average.
The Baylor Bears enter the tournament with a 2-3 overall mark... Jordan Vannatta leads the team offensively with a .429 record with a pair of home runs... both Whitney Canion and Courtney Repka each have a win on the mound.
Last Time Out: Texas State Tournament
The Mavericks finished their first tournament of the season with a 4-1 record... after falling in the opening game to Oklahoma State 12-0, the Mavs got back on track and won their final four games of the tournament... UTA recorded victories over New Mexico (3-2), back-to-back wins over Northern Illinois (5-4, 2-1) and defending SLC Champions Texas State (10-7)... both the Mavericks offense and defense were key in all four wins... senior Cara Hulme recorded a 2-1 mark on the mound and at the plate finished with a .313 average with a pair of home runs and driving in three RBI... freshman Teri Lyles was a huge contributor as she recorded a 2-0 mark on the mound... she led the Mavs to wins over New Mexico and Northern Illinois (G2)... both Hulme and Lyles were named Southland Conference Players of the Week.
UT Arlington Off To 4-1 Start
The Mavs open its 2010 season posting a 4-1 record at the Century Link Classic in San Marcos. The UT Arlington Mavericks jumped out to a 4-1 record at the Century Link Classic posting wins against New Mexico, a doubleheader sweep over Northern Illinois and an early victory versus conference rival Texas State. The Mavs take the field next in Waco, Texas at the Baylor Tournament. UTA is scheduled to take on Texas-El Paso in doubleheader format starting at 10 a.m.
MAVS SWEEP SLC PLAYER OF THE WEEK AWARDS
senior Cara Hulme has been named the Southland Conference Hitter of the Week and freshman teammate Teri Lyles has been named the Southland Pitcher of the week by vote of the league's sports information directors the league office announced Tuesday. The Mavs sweep the initial player of the week awards for the 2010 season after jumping out to a quick 4-1 start.
A native of Van, Texas, Hulme led the Mavericks to a 4-1 record on the mound and at the plate this past weekend at the Texas State Tournament. Hulme finished the weekend with a .312 average, with a pair of homeruns and drove in six RBI's. One of her best hitting performances came against New Mexico where she went 1-for-3 at the plate with a homerun and three RBI. Hulme also went 2-1 on the mound in 17 innings pitched with 13 strikeouts.
Lyles recorded a perfect 2-0 record on the hill for the Mavericks, pitching two complete games. A native of Keller, Texas, Lyles finished the weekend with a 1.50 ERA and held her opponents to a .204 average. In two games, Lyles held her opponents to just three runs while sitting down seven and recorded wins over New Mexico and Northern Illinois.
Teri Lyles ADDS DEPTH TO PITCHING STAFF
A new face will be on the mound for the Mavs this season... Keller High School product Teri Lyles joins the Mavericks pitching staff... Lyles along with senior Cara Hulme will look to guide UTA throughout the season.
TWO EARN FIRST TEAM PRESEASON HONORS
Seniors Samantha Chumchal and Heather Fortenberry were selected as first team preseason favorites. Chumchal along with Fortenberry were the only Mavericks to earn preseason honors. The senior catcher led the team with a .324 batting average where she connected on 33 hits, including four doubles and a team high nine homeruns.
Fortenberry is coming off season where she was named the 2010 SLC Utility Player of the Year and earned first team all-SLC honors. Recorded a .303 batting average with six home runs and made 20 appearances on the mound.
Before the Mavs begin conference action, UT Arlington will compete in three tournaments in prepration for league play which is set to begin March 2 at Texas State... The Mavericks will first compete in the Texas State Tournament followed by the Baylor Tournament and end with the UT Arlington Classic.
TEXAS COMES TO TOWN
The University of Texas will be one of 14 teams to play at Allan Saxe Field... the Mavericks welcome the Longhorns for a single game Mar. 11 at 6:30 p.m.
HEDRICK ADDS SIX TO 2011 ROSTER
The Mavericks signed Katherine Alexis Cantu (Wakeland HS), Callie Collins (Rusk HS), Rachel Forshaw (Coppell HS), Stephanie Gonzalez (Clear Brook HS) Ashley McCarroll (Forney HS) and Taylor Zink (Sterling HS).
Cantu comes to UT Arlington from Wakeland HS where she was named the 9-4A MVP while pitching 198 innings with a 26-7 record, 0.95 ERA with 311 strikeouts. Last season, Cantu earned first team 9-4A all-district honors and was a first team all-area-utility award winner. The standout pitcher was a Texas Sports Writers Association All-State player and Louisville Slugger/NFCA South Central All-Region Second Team recipient.
Collins led Rusk HS to a 31-5 record and the 18-3A area championship. She was selected to the Texas Sports Writer Association All State Team and the 18-3A All-District Co-MVP as a junior. Collins finished with a 0.93 ERA with 315 strikeouts and in her three seasons has accumulated 817. At the plate, Collins recorded a .366 average with 15 doubles and 30 RBI last season.
Forshaw is a four year letter winner from Coppell HS where she helped lead the Cowgirls last season to the 6-5A area finals. The catcher led the team in batting with a .422 average and RBI. Forshaw earned first team all-district honors and was a member of the USSSA 18U All-World Series Team in 2008.
Gonzalez, a middle infielder from Clear Brook HS finished her junior season with a .350 batting average with 25 RBI and 45 stolen bases. Gonzalez earned second team all-district honors and helped lead Clear Brook to a 24-5A district championship.
SLC PRESEASON POLL
UT Arlington was picked to finish 6th out of 11 teams in the Southland Conference Preseason Poll. Last season the Mavericks were 23-24 in the conference and placed fifth. Defending SLC champions-Texas State was tabbed as the favorite to win the Soutland Conference by the conference coaches and SID's.
