MAVERICKS RECORD 2-1 VICTORY OVER UMKC, DROP 6-1 DECISION TO HBU

Arlington. Texas - The Mavericks opened the UT Arlington Softball Tournament with a 2-1 victory over Missouri-Kansas City but fell in game two, 6-1 against Houston Baptist on Friday, February 20 at the Allan Saxe Field. The Mavs improved their overall record to 2-7.
UTA 2, UMKC 1
The Kangaroos highlighted the scoreboard in the top of the third when Ashley Whiteside reached on a fielder's choice and later scored on a single by Kelly Fischer, giving UMCK a 1-0 advantage.
UTA came right back in the bottom half of the inning plating two runs on two hits. With two quick outs in the frame, newcomer Kelsey Kaiser connected on a single to center field and advanced to second with a stolen base. Courtney Zink reached on a two-out walk, placing runners on first and second for Rebecca Collom who doubled to left center, scoring Kaiser and Zink.
The Mavericks kept the defense tight on the Kangaroos holding them scoreless through the final four innings.
Junior Cara Hulme collected her second win of the season, pitching a complete game, allowing one run on three hits and striking out eight.
Offensively the Mavs were led by Collom who drove in the winning run. She went 1-for-3 with two RBI.
UTA 1, HOUSTON BAPTIST 6
The Mavs quickly found themselves down 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning when HBU connected on a run on a pair of hits. With one out in the frame, Laine Skelton singled to right field and scored on a double to left center.
The Huskies plated three runs on two hits in the bottom of the second frame and connected on four runs in the fourth frame on three hits.
UT Arlington's only run came in the sixth inning on two hits by Collom and Samantha Chumchal. Kaiser who pitch ran for Collom came around to score after Chumchal singled.
Tournament action continues for the Mavericks tomorrow when they face against Texas Southern at 5:30 p.m. followed by a rematch with Houston Baptist at 8 p.m.
OTHER TOURNAMENT ACTION
UMKC 3, TSU 0
UMKC Kangaroos defeated the Texas Southern 3-0 in the first game of the UTA Invitational. The Lady Roos pitching shut out the Texas Southern line up for seven innings as UMKC cruised to victory in the opening game of the tournament.
HBU 2, TSU 1
Houston Baptist right-hander Jamie Weidert scattered 10 hits and struck out five batters over seven innings to lift the Huskies to a 2-1 victory against Texas Southern. HBU (3-4) took a two-run lead with a run each in the fifth and sixth innings and needed Weidert (2-2) to close things out in the final inning to secure the victory. Texas Southern threatened with a run in the top of the seventh but stranded a runner on first to end the game. Weidert also went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Huskies offense. Texas Southern got two hits apiece from Jacquiline Ramos, Tenesha Skrine and Courtney Brown but stranded 10 runners for its second loss in two chances during the tournament. Katie Ortiz (1-3) took the loss for the Tigers (1-7).
