Feb. 21, 2013

ARLINGTON, Texas--The UT Arlington softball team heads to San Marcos for the Texas Shootout hosted by Texas State.

The Mavericks are 4-1 after opening the season at the UCF Holiday Inn Select in Orlando, Fla. The Mavs defeated Buffalo, Florida A&M, Stetson and South Carolina. The team's lone loss came when hosting UCF defeated the Mavericks 1-0 in eight innings.

"The team played very well this past weekend," UT Arlington coach Kristie Fox said. "We try to stay grounded and remember all the hard work and focus that was put in that resulted in that success.  I think that players definitely gained confidence on the mound and with the bats on Sunday."

UTA will face Sam Houston State at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 22 for its first game of the Texas Shootout. This will be the 95th meeting between the two schools with the Bearkats leading the series 51-43. This is also the first time since 1988 the two are meeting outside of Southland Conference competition.

The Mavs will conclude Friday play with a 1:30 p.m. game against No. 25 Baylor University. This marks the 64th matchup for the Mavericks and the Bears with Baylor winning the last nine contests between the two schools.

The team will open Saturday competition against North Texas at 11:30 a.m. The Mavericks lead the series 24-13 against the Mean Green although they have lost the last six games.

Coach Fox will meet with a few familiar faces when the Mavericks face Texas Tech at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. Fox was an assistant coach at Tech before coming to UT Arlington and this is the first time she will face her old stomping grounds.

"Besides being excited to see my former players and friends from Tech the focus for my team is the very next game, so right now we are thinking about Sam Houston and no one else.

The tournament will conclude Sunday as wins and losses will determine the competition.
