Arlington, Texas - UT Arlington senior first baseman Rebecca Collom has been named the Southland Conference Hitter of the Week and freshman right-hander Callie Collins has been named the Southland Pitcher of the Week by vote of the league's sports information directors the league office announced Tuesday.
Collom led the Mavericks at the 2011 Aggie Classic batting .588 with a 1.000 slugging percentage and a .579 on-base percentage. Collom connected on 10 hits, including four doubles and a home run. A native of New Boston, Texas, Collom also recorded seven RBI and scored two runs. Against No. 23 Texas A&M, Collom went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Collom recorded four multi-hit games this weekend.
Collins finished the 2011 Aggie Classic with a 1-1 record on the mound. A native of Rusk, Texas, Collins led the Mavericks to an 8-3 win over Wichita State Feb. 18 and suffered a tough 4-0 loss to No. 23 Texas A&M. Collins finished with a 2.76 ERA in 12.2 innings pitched while holding her opponents to a .208 batting average. Collins also racked up nine strikeouts, eight of which came against Wichita State.
This week's hitter honorable mentions are Nicholls junior utility player Ashley Ray and UTSA freshman catcher Molly Fichtner. Pitching honorable mention is Nicholls sophomore right-hander Ashton Bennett. To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland women's basketball sports information directors.
