ARLINGTON, Texas -- The UT Arlington Mavericks will host the UT Arlington Classic at Allan Saxe Field beginning Friday, March 1 at 1 p.m. This will mark the home opener for the Mavs this season.
UTA (6-4) will open the tournament with a doubleheader. The first game will be against No. 21Tulsa (11-4) at 1 p.m. Friday, March 1. The Mavericks are 8-7 all-time against the Golden Hurricanes but fell 3-0 in their last meeting on Feb. 25, 2011 in Arlington.
The Mavs will then play Creighton (5-4) at 3 p.m. in the second game of the doubleheader. The Bluejays are the only team participating in the tournament who lead in the all-time series record, 12-3. Creighton won the last meeting 3-2 on Feb. 26, 2011 in Arlington.
"We're focusing on our first game with Tulsa, " UT Arlington coach Kristie Fox said, "and we're hoping to get a win one game at a time."
Tulsa will then play Lamar at 5 p.m. followed by Lamar versus Creighton at 7 p.m. to close out the first day of the UT Arlington Classic.
Tulsa and Creighton will square off first Saturday, March 2 at 11 a.m. At 1 p.m. the Mavericks will face Lamar (5-7) in their last game before tournament seeding is determined. UTA leads the Cardinals 10-1 all-time with a 7-1 win in their last meeting in Denton, Texas on April 25, 1987.
After the completion of the game between UTA and Lamar all teams will be seeded one through four based on tournament record. Two semi final games will be played to close out the second day of the UT Arlington Classic. The number two and three seeds will play at 5 p.m. while seeds one and four will follow at 7 p.m.
The teams who lost their semi final game will compete in the consolation game at 10 a.m. Sunday, March 3. Those two teams who won their semi final game will play in the UT Arlington Classic championship at 11a.m. The higher seeded team will be the home team Sunday.
The Mavericks will travel to Lubbock, Texas to compete in the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic hosted by Texas Tech on March 8-11.
