The Mavericks own a 52-39 series record over the Bobcats... UTA and Texas State met already this season at the CenturyLink Classic in San Marcos with the Mavs rolling to a 10-7 win... prior to their meeting in San Marcos, the Mavericks had lost eight straight games to the Bobcats... Samantha Chumchal led the Mavs offensively, going 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles... senior Cara Hulme picked up the win, tossing a complete game.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Texas State - The Bobcats enter Tuesday's conference match-up with a 3-9 overall record... Texas State has lost their last three games, falling to Tulsa (5-4) in eight innings, Eastern Illinois (4-1), Creighton (2-0) in eight innings... their last win came against UMKC (4-2) Feb. 26 at the Embassy Suites Tulsa Invitational... one of the Bobcats losses came against the Mavericks at the CenturyLink Classic in San Marcos... UTA recorded a 10-7 win over TXST (Feb. 14)... Haley Lemons leads the team offensively with a .353 average... as a team, the Bobcats are batting .254 with four players recording home runs... on the mound, Chandler Hall had recorded all three wins with a 4.17 ERA.
Last Time Out: UT ARLINGTON CLASSIC
The Mavs went 2-3 in their tournament, recording victories over Texas Southern and Prairie View A&M... in the final day of the tournament, UT Arlington dropped a 3-2,11 inning game to Wichita State and a 3-2 Texas Tech... Courtney Zink and Erica LeFlore led the Mavs in the tournament with a .385 average... each recorded five hits... LeFlore recorded two doubles and drove in three RBI... Heather Fortenberry and Rebecca Collom each connected on homers against the Texas Tech... on the hill, Teri Lyles and Cara Hulme each picked up a win.
AGAINST THE BIG 12
Despite an 0-3 record against teams in the Big 12, the Mavericks have not gone out without a fight... UT Arlington had already faced Oklahoma State, Baylor and Texas Tech... at the UT Arlington Classic, the Mavs dropped a hard fought 3-2 loss to Texas Tech... senior Heather Fortenberry homered down the right field line and Rebecca Collom followed with a home run of her own in the sixth inning... UTA will play one final team from the Big 12 in Texas on Thursday, March 11 at Allan Saxe Field at 6:30 p.m.... they will have a rematch double-header with Baylor on March 16 at Allan Saxe Field at 4 and 6 p.m.
HULME GOING YARD
Not only has senior Cara Hulme been a force on the mound but also at the plate... Hulme ranks fifth on the team in batting with a .262 average... she recorded back-to-back homers at the Texas State Tournament against New Mexico and Northern Illinois... one of which was a three-run home run... prior to the Baylor game, Hulme was on an eight game hit streak.
PITCHING DUO COLLECTS HARDWARE
Senior Cara Hulme and freshman Teri Lyles were named to the all-tournament team. Hulme finished the tournament with a 2-1 record, earning wins against Tulsa and Central Arkansas. At the plate, Hulme recorded a .364 average with three RBI, a home run and seven walks... Lyles went 1-1 and finished the tournament with a 0.89 ERA. Lyles connected on at least one hit in all five games and connected on two multi-hit performances.
Teri Lyles ADDS DEPTH TO PITCHING STAFF
A new face will be on the mound for the Mavs this season... Keller High School product Teri Lyles joins the Mavericks pitching staff... Lyles along with senior Cara Hulme will look to guide UTA throughout the season.
TWO EARN FIRST TEAM PRESEASON HONORS
Seniors Samantha Chumchal and Heather Fortenberry were selected as first team preseason favorites. Chumchal along with Fortenberry were the only Mavericks to earn preseason honors. The senior catcher led the team with a .324 batting average where she connected on 33 hits, including four doubles and a team high nine homeruns.
Fortenberry is coming off season where she was named the 2010 SLC Utility Player of the Year and earned first team all-SLC honors. Recorded a .303 batting average with six home runs and made 20 appearances on the mound.
TEXAS COMES TO TOWN
The University of Texas will be one of 14 teams to play at Allan Saxe Field... the Mavericks welcome the Longhorns for a single game Mar. 11 at 6:30 p.m.
LYLES IN FULL SWING
As the leadoff hitter for the Mavericks, Lyles has reached base 12 times, connected on 11 hits... she has connected on three multi-hit performances... the first at Texas State (Feb. 14), Tulsa (Feb. 19), and Wichita State (Feb. 20)... on the mound, Lyles has a 4-2 mark with a .88 ERA... in seven appearances, she allowed 10 runs and recorded 31 strikeouts.
