Arlington, Texas - UT Arlington freshman right-hander Callie Collins has been named the Southland Pitcher of the Week by vote of the league's sports information directors the league office announced Tuesday. Collins award marks the third by a Maverick in two weeks.
Collins receives her second consecutive pitcher of the week honor. She improved to 5-1 on the mound and went 3-0 in the UTA Classic. Collins, a true freshman, recorded a pair of wins against Centenary and a win against Creighton.
She finished the tournament with a 0.74 ERA in 19 innings pitched and recorded 34 strikeouts. Collins also held her opponents to a .183 batting average. She recorded a season-high 15 strikeouts against Centenary and followed that performance with 12 strikeouts against Creighton.
The Rusk, Texas native earned her first SLC Pitcher of the Week honors on February 22 after finished the 2011 Aggie Classic with a 1-1 record on the mound. Collins led the Mavericks to an 8-3 win over Wichita State Feb. 18 and suffered a tough 4-0 loss to No. 23 Texas A&M. Collins finished with a 2.76 ERA in 12.2 innings pitched while holding her opponents to a .208 batting average. Collins also racked up nine strikeouts, eight of which came against Wichita State.
This week's hitter honorable mentions are McNeese State senior shortstop Molly Guidry, Northwestern State sophomore designated player Kylie Roos, Southeastern Louisiana sophomore outfielder Kelsey Nichols and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi junior outfielder Hannah Schwarz. Pitching honorable mentions are Central Arkansas sophomore Kelsey Armstrong, Roos, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi junior Vianca Pesina and Texas State sophomore Anne Marie Taylor. To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland women's basketball sports information directors.
Each school's SID nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own player.
