UTA SOFTBALL SPLITS DOUBLE HEADER WITH NICHOLLS STATE
March 7, 2009
Arlington, Texas - Game # 1 UTA 3, Nicholls St. 0
The Lady Mavs beat Nicholls State 3 to 0 in the first game of the weekend series Saturday afternoon at Allan Saxe Field. UTA was led by a stellar performance from ace Cara Hulme. Hulme gave up no runs on three hits and struck out 11 Nicholls State batters. Hulme's stingy performance improves her record to 4-8 on the year. She now has 59 strikeouts, which leads all Mavs pitchers. The UTA offense helped out Hulme by exploding in the bottom of the sixth inning driving in three runs. Whitney Simpson started off the action by driving in the first run of the game with an RBI double that scored Courtney Zink. Samantha Chumchal, who reached safely in her three plate appearances, followed that up with a two run triple to center field. The Mavs out hit Colonels 4 to 3 for the game. Those three runs were enough for the Mavs victory. UTA improves to 6-13 on the season while Nicholls State drops to 16-7.
Game #2 Nicholls St. 3, UTA 2
The Lady Mavs dropped the second of the back to back games losing 3-2 to Nicholls State Saturday afternoon at Allan Saxe Field. UTA sent Cassandra Nordie to the rubber for the second game and the young sophomore got roughed up early in the top of the first giving up two runs. She only allowed one hit, but a pair of errors extended the inning for the Colonels. Nordie pitched a scoreless second inning, but was then pulled from the game in the top of the third inning after giving up a home run to Nicholls State's Danielle Clayton. Junior pitcher Heather Fortenberry came in in relief and threw five scoreless innings. The UTA offense was stymied by Audrey Wood who pitched four scoreless innings allowing three hits. Wood was knocked out of the game in the bottom of the fifth when Erica LeFlore hit a shot back at the mound that ricochet off Wood's face. The Mavs went on to score a run off of Lacey Gros, who came in to replace Wood, in the inning and closed the deficit to 3 to 1. UTA responded again in the bottom of the sixth when Heather Fortenberry helped her own cause and drove in Courtney Zink on an RBI single to center field. A questionable foul call down the third base line later in the inning cost the Mavs what would have been the game tying run was disallowed after a discussion by the umpires. Gros was able to keep the Mavs hitters at bay the rest of the game and seal the victory for the Colonels. Audrey Wood notches her eighth victory of the season improving her record to 8-4. Cassandra Nordie takes her second loss of the year dropping to 0-2. UTA drops to 6-14 for the season and Nicholls State improves to 17-7. The Mavs and Colonels spilt the first two games of the series and will meet at noon on Sunday to play the third and final game.
