LADY MAVS CLOSE OUT NICHOLLS STATE IN FINAL GAME OF HOME SERIES
March 10, 2009
Arlington, Texas - UTA 5, Nicholls State 4
The Lady Mavs rallied from a 4 run deficit to beat Nicholls State 5-4 Sunday afternoon at Allan Saxe Field. The Mavs won two out of three games against a Nicholls State team who was undefeated in conference play entering the weekend series. UTA's Cara Hulme, who pitched a three hit shutout victory in the first game of the series, did not have her good stuff going early against the Nicholls State batter. Hulme only lasted a third of an inning thanks to two errors by the Mavs that paved the way to two runs. The Colonels scored four runs in the top of the first and jumped to a commanding lead. UTA responded in the bottom of the second and third innings as the offense erupted for five Mavs runs. Samantha Chumchal, who had a pair of RBI's in the first game of the series, stepped up again with a two run home run in the second that cut Nicholls State's lead in half. Heather Fortenberry came up big in the bottom of the third hitting a three run home run that gave UTA a 5-4 lead. Fortenberry, who relieved Hulme in the first, helped her own cause with that shot and effectively won the game for the Mavs because no more runs were scored after that point. Fortenberry went on to only give up one hit after the first in route to the victory. The Mesquite native earned her third victory of the year and improved to 3-5. The Lady Mavs improve to 7-14 overall and 3-5 in conference for the season and Nicholls State falls to 16-8 overall and 6-2 in conference play. The Lady Mavs are in action again this weekend as they head southbound 35 to San Antonio to take on UTSA for a three game series.
