MAVS TRAVEL TO HUNTSVILLE FOR SLC SOFTBALL SERIES WITH BEARKATS

ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington, the defending Southland Conference regular season softball champion takes on the defending SLC tournament champion Saturday and Sunday when the Mavericks visit the Bearkat Softball Complex to take on Sam Houston State.

The Mavs and the Bearkats meet Saturday in a 1 p.m. doubleheader, and the series will wrap-up Sunday afternoon with a 1 p.m. single game.

UTA and SHSU finished first and second, respectively, in the final regular season standings in 2007. The Mavs posted a 19-5 league mark while the Bearkats went 20-10. But Sam Houston State earned the league's NCAA playoff berth by winning the post-season tournament in Huntsville. Sam Houston defeated UTA 1-0 in the tournament semifinals.

This year Sam Houston and UTA enter this conference series in fifth and sixth place, respectively, in the SLC standings. Sam Houston is 16-17 for the year with a 7-5 Southland mark. UTA stands 11-13 for the season and is 8-7 in SLC play.

Sophomore Cara Hulme continues to lead UTA offensively on the season with a .361 average, while junior transfer Christina Allen leads the team with a .381 average in conference games.

Outfielder Brittany Washington has seven home runs on the season and hot on her trail with six home runs is senior shortstop Amanda Swofford. Washington also lead the Mavs with 17 runs, four doubles and 16 RBI.

In conference action, Hulme has gone 6-2 in the circle recording four shutouts and posting a league low 0.78 earned run average. For the season, Hulme is 6-4 with a 1.94 ERA, while senior pitcher Laura Jones is 3-8 with a 1.34 ERA.

Sam Houston is coming off a mid-week series loss to McNeese State. The Cowgirls swept the doubleheader 3-2 and 3-1 on Tuesday, but the Bearkats came back to win the final game 5-4 on Wednesday.

 

 

Pitcher/designated player Morgan Mikulin is leading the Bearkats with a.318 average and five home runs. Mikulin also leads the team in RBIs with 24. She is also responsible for Sam Houston's defense in the circle, posting a 9-7 record with a 1.62 earned run average. Brandi Crnkovic is 7-10 for the year with a 2.84 ERA.
