ARLINGTON, Texas - The Mavericks are 10-7 in conference. Part of that has to do with the leadership provided by senior catcher Samantha Chumchal.
Chumchal isn't only leading the team off the field, but leading by example. She leads the team with eight doubles and is tied for second on the team in RBIs with 20.
UTAMAVS.com's Josh Bowe sat down with Chumchal to discuss her last season wearing a Mavericks uniform and playing bigger teams out of conference.
Josh Bowe: "Since you're one of the few seniors on the team, does that add any more pressure or responsibility?
Samantha Chumchal: "I do. I feel like not only do I need to perform for this year, but I'm supposed to leave something behind."
JB: "In softball you only have to work with one or two pitchers as opposed to baseball which has multiple starters. Do you believe there is an even closer bond between yourself and the pitchers?"
SC: "Well the relationships are great. I think its good on the field but great off the field. We hang out a lot outside of softball."
JB: "Can you say that about the whole team?"
SC: "I do. I don't think anybody dislikes anybody. We're actually one of the few teams that doesn't have any problems with that."
JB: "How did you get into softball and playing catcher?"
SC: "It started with my parents. They showed it to me and I was naturally good at it so I just kept going. I kept pushing myself and I love it."
JB: Is there anyone you look up too in softball or in Major League Baseball?"
SC: "(laughs) Honestly, no. I just play to play, because I love to play. I don't really watch other sports really."
JB: "Is it weird that the end of your career is coming up? It's almost May."
SC: "It is. I think we only have 15 games left. I don't know what I'm going to do afterwards."
JB: "What do you like most about UTA?"
SC: "It's the people. But probably my teammates. I love my team""
JB: "You've recently played games against big time teams like Texas, Baylor and Texas Tech. You've been competitive in every game. What does that show about your club?"
SC: "I'm glad we've been respectable against them. Because honestly in my eyes, I don't think they're not that much better than us. If we play a good game and they don't, I feel like it could go either way every time."
