NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana – Senior Callie Collins was named Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
"Callie did a great job of hitting her spots and setting up the hitters this week," UT Arlington coach Kristie Fox said. "When she goes out there with confidence I think she can compete with anyone. She really set the tone for us to go out and win some games."
UT Arlington went 2-1 last week with wins against Abilene Christian and Troy. Collins went 2-0 during the week for the Mavericks, pitching two complete games. She gave up just one run off of four hits, while striking out 11 batters in 13 innings. The one run came in a 2-1 Maverick victory over Troy. Collins helped her team shutout Abilene Christian in a mid-week game allowing no runs with four strikeouts.
This is Collins' second Pitcher of the Week honor, as she received the honor on Feb. 24 after making five appearances and three starts during the UTA Hilton Invitational. She earned a 3-0 record and allowing just two earned runs through 19.1 innings pitched.
The Mavericks return to action Wednesday as they travel to Denton to take on North Texas at 6 p.m. UTA returns home to host ULM with a doubleheader Friday at 5 p.m. and a single game Saturday at 1 p.m. at Allan Saxe Field.
Conference play continues next weekend as teams begin the final stretch to the 2014 Sun Belt Conference Softball Championship. All eight teams will advance to the conference tournament held May 7-10 in Lafayette, La., on the campus of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
