SB: Mavs travel to Denton to face North Texas

ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington softball heads to Denton to take on cross-town rival North Texas Wednesday night at 6 p.m. at Lovelace Stadium.

The Mavericks (17-24, 2-9 SBC) square off against the Mean Green for the 41st time in program history. Last year North Texas defeated UT Arlington 8-7 in Denton.

UT ARLINGTON LAST WEEK: UT Arlington wrapped up the last week with a 2-1 record after a win against Abilene Christian and Sun Belt Conference opponent Troy. The Mavericks' lone defeat was a 5-4 loss to the Trojans as the two teams ended the series 1-1 after inclement weather came into the area, cancelling Sunday's game. Junior Nina Villanueva hit her seventh home run of the season as she led the Mavericks with a .778 batting average this week. Villanueva went 4-4 with a home run in the sixth, a triple and two singles at Abilene Christian. She continued to produce from the plate with two runs off of three hits and two stolen bases against Troy. Villanueva completed the three games with seven putouts and six assists from shortstop.

SCOUTING NORTH TEXAS: The Mean Green are 27-15 overall and 12-5 in Conference USA. North Texas has four players batting over. 300 with junior Dani Hoff leading the team with a .367 average. Hoff and senior Brooke Foster each have 51 hits and combine for 71 runs. The team's four-member pitching staff combines for a 3.54 ERA.

AT THE PLATE: Junior Nina Villanueva is batting .347 to lead the Mavericks, with 43 hits and 32 RBI on the season. Fellow junior Meagan Michele is batting .289 in league play with eight hits, one home run and 12 total bases.



ROADIES:  The Mavericks struggle from the road with a 3-8 record, but won their last road game 8-0 against Abilene Christian.

SB: Mavs fall 8-7 to North Texas
UT Arlington fell 8-7 after North Texas hit a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning at Lovelace Stadium.

IT’S A NUMBERS GAME: The Mavericks are 12-5 when leading after the fourth inning. The team is a perfect 8-0 when scoring six or more runs and 13-1 when out-hitting its opponent.

COLLINS NAMED SBC PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Senior pitcher Callie Collins earned UT Arlington's first Sun Belt Conference softball accolades by being named the SBC Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 24. Collins made five appearances and three starts during the UTA Hilton Invitational, earning a 3-0 record and allowing just two earned runs through 19.1 innings pitched. She also received the honor on April 14 after she went 2-0 pitching two complete games. She gave up just one run off of four hits, while striking out 11 batters in 13 innings. The one run came in a 2-1 Maverick victory over Troy. Collins helped her team shutout Abilene Christian in a mid-week game allowing no runs with four strikeouts.

SECOND YEAR UNDER FOX: UT Arlington is in its second season under coach Kristie Fox. Fox helped the Mavs improve from a 15-26 record in 2012 to a 25-28 record in 2013. Fox, a former All-American, was a two-time national champion at Arizona and an assistant coach at Texas Tech prior to accepting the position with the Mavericks.

 The Mavericks softball team will be in their third conference in as many years with the move to the Sun Belt. UTA moved from the Southland Conference in 2012 to the Western Athletic Conference in 2013.
