SB: Mavs resume rivalry with ULM

ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington softball hosts Sun Belt opponent ULM in a doubleheader Friday starting at 5 p.m. and a single game Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Mavericks (17-25, 2-9 SBC)  and the Warhawks, both former members of the Southland Conference, have met 87 times over the years.  UT Arlington leads the series 44-43, winning the last nine matchups (2004-06).

"Our games this weekend are really important," UT Arlington coach Kristie Fox said. "We need to get some wins and try to get ahead of them in the standings so we can get better seeding when we get to the conference tournament."

UT ARLINGTON LAST WEEK: UT Arlington wrapped up the last week with a 2-1 record after a win against Abilene Christian and Sun Belt Conference opponent Troy. The Mavericks' lone defeat was a 5-4 loss to the Trojans, as the two teams ended the series 1-1 after inclement weather came into the area, cancelling Sunday's game. Junior Nina Villanueva hit her seventh home run of the season, leading the Mavericks with a .778 batting average last week. Villanueva went 4-4 with a home run in the sixth, a triple and two singles at Abilene Christian. Villanueva completed the three games with seven putouts and six assists from shortstop.

SCOUTING ULM: The Warhawks are 18-17 overall and 4-7 in Sun Belt action. ULM has six players batting in the .300s, with junior Miyuki Navarrete leading the team batting .356 and 31 runs off 37 hits. ULM has two batters hitting .344 combining for 31 runs and 30 RBI.  Warhawks senior Samantha Hamby has a 3.87 ERA (12-10) in 22 appearances and 18 starts.

AT THE PLATE: Junior Nina Villanueva is batting .344 to lead the Mavericks, with 44 hits and 32 RBI on the season. Fellow junior Meagan Michele is batting .286 in league play with eight hits, one home run and 12 total bases in SBC play.

HOMEBODIES:  The Mavericks are 8-7 when playing at Allan Saxe Field and went 1-1 at home last weekend against Troy. Nina Villanueva is batting .395 at home and sophomore Rebecca Stokes is batting .356.

IT’S A NUMBERS GAME: The Mavericks are 12-5 when leading after the fourth inning. The team is a perfect 8-0 when scoring six or more runs and 13-1 when out-hitting its opponent.

COLLINS NAMED SBC PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Senior pitcher Callie Collins earned UT Arlington's first Sun Belt Conference softball accolades by being named the SBC Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 24. Collins made five appearances and three starts during the UTA Hilton Invitational, earning a 3-0 record and allowing just two earned runs through 19.1 innings pitched. She also received the honor on April 14 after she went 2-0 pitching two complete games. She gave up just one run off of four hits, while striking out 11 batters in 13 innings. The one run came in a 2-1 Maverick victory over Troy. Collins helped her team shutout Abilene Christian in a mid-week game allowing no runs with four strikeouts.

SECOND YEAR UNDER FOX: UT Arlington is in its second season under coach Kristie Fox. Fox helped the Mavs improve from a 15-26 record in 2012 to a 25-28 record in 2013. Fox, a former All-American, was a two-time national champion at Arizona and an assistant coach at Texas Tech prior to accepting the position with the Mavericks.

 The Mavericks softball team will be in their third conference in as many years with the move to the Sun Belt. UTA moved from the Southland Conference in 2012 to the Western Athletic Conference in 2013.
