RAIN HALTS SOFTBALL ACTION AT ALLAN SAXE FIELD
April 29, 2009
Arlington, Texas - Four innings of softball action was all UT Arlington and North Texas was able to play after rain began to pour at Allan Saxe Field. Neither team was credited for the win or the loss. With the Mavericks trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth and with bases loaded, the umpires and coaches decided to call the game due to the constant downpour of rain. The Mean Green got on board in the top of the third, plating three runs on three hits including a two-run homer to left field by Mariza Martinez. UTA connected on a solo run in the bottom half of the frame after Courtney Zink singled over the second basemen, scoring Jaimee Stinson from second. Stinson reached on a double to right center earlier in the inning. Before the game was called, the Mavericks were on the verge of scoring runs as they had bases loaded with one out, Stinson at the plate and Rebecca Collom had just scored on a fielder's choice by Kari Karr. Prior to the start of the game, the UT Arlington softball squad along with North Texas honored Laurren Smith a Bone Cancer survivor by throwing out the first pitch. All proceeds to the game went to benefit the Brandi McPherson Foundation.
The Mavericks return to the diamond on Saturday, May 2-3 for a three-game series with Southeastern Louisiana in Hammond, La. Game one is set for 3 p.m.
