ARLINGTON, Texas -- The UT Arlington softball team will complete in their final Western Athletic Conference series of the 2013 season this weekend as the Mavericks travels to San Antonio to face in-state rival UTSA.
The Mavericks (22-25, 6-12 WAC) will take on the Roadrunners in a single game Friday at 6 p.m. followed by a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 3 p.m.
“Instead of focusing on the pressure, we’re focusing on our composure,” UT Arlington head coach Kristie Fox said. “We’re taking care of the things we can take care of and focusing on us rather than the situation at hand. If we come out and player our game and take care of business I think we have a good shot.”
The Mavericks are in seventh place and are in a must-win situation as the hope to move into sixth in order to clinch the final slot of the conference tournament.
Friday marks the 72nd meeting between the two schools, with UTSA leading the series 41-30. The Mavs and Roadrunners competed in the Southland Conference last season and made the move to the Western Athletic Conference for one season. UTSA will move on to Conference USA next season, marking the first time since 1993 that these in-state rivals will not be in the same conference.
Senior pitcher Teri Lyles continues to excel, as she leads the WAC in individual pitching with 1.62 ERA in 194.1 innings pitched and 116 strikeouts. Sophomore Nina Villanueva is leading the Mavs with a .308 batting average in all games and .436 in all conference matchups.
UTSA in currently 8-10 in the WAC and tied for third place along with Louisiana Tech, Seattle U and Texas State. The Roadrunners have five players batting over .300 on the season with Darian Blake leading her team with a .372 average.
