SB: Mavs head to 2013 WAC Tournament
May 7, 2013
ARLINGTON, Texas -- The UT Arlington softball team is headed to the 2013 Western Athletic Conference Tournament.
The Mavericks (24-26, 8-13) fought their way into the final seed of the conference tournament after winning the series at UTSA this past weekend.
UTA is the No. 6 seed and will face No. 3 seed Louisiana Tech Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Lady Techster Softball Complex. This Lady Techsters serves as this year's host to the WAC tournament.
"I'm really proud of the girls, it comes down to them," UT Arlington coach Kristie Fox said. "The girls know they can fight through anything and in any situation they're put in they can still come out on top. These past couples weeks we've pitched well, we've played defense well and we got the hit when it mattered."
Louisiana Tech is 16-14 overall and 11-10 through league play, including a sweep over the Mavs earlier this season.
"Payback," was the first word that popped into senior pitcher Teri Lyle's mind when asked about taking on LA Tech.
"We are not the same team," she said. "We've worked through so much adversity since then, and I'm 100 percent positive that we're a different team now and we're going to give them a run for their money."
Lyles leads the conference in individual pitching with a 1.58 ERA in 208.1 innings throughout the season. Nina Villanueva has also stepped up for the Mavs. The sophomore is hitting .438 through conference, while Meagan Michele hit three home runs in her last four games.
