ROADRUNNERS RUN RULE MAVERICKS WITH NINE RUN FIFTH INNING

Lake Charles, La. - After falling in round one to Stephen F. Austin, the UT Arlington Mavericks moved to the losers bracket where they faced UTSA and fell 12-3 in five innings of action at the Cowgirls Diamond in Lake Charles, La. The Roadrunners improved to 29-28 with the win while the Mavs end their season with a 23-24 record. UTSA knocked in three runs in the top of the third when Rudi Cantu poked a blooper down the left field line and scored the Roadrunners first run on sacrifice fly to center field by Amber Anderson. Caitlyn Ivy singled up the middle, driving in a pair of runs for UTSA and giving them a 3-0 advantage. The Mavericks cut the deficit to 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth when pitcher Cassandra Nordie homered over the center field wall. UTA was in good position to make a comeback, until the Roadrunners pounded out eight hits and scored nine runs in the top of the fifth frame. UTSA connected on six singles and a three-run homer in the inning. With the eight run rule in effect heading into the bottom half of the frame, UT Arlington drove in a pair of runs following a two-run homer by Samantha Chumchal but it wasn't enough as Whitney Simpson ended the game with a shallow fly ball to left field. Nordie (2-2) took the loss for the Mavs, pitching 4.1 innings, allowing six runs on eight hits. Cara Hulme finished the game, pitching 0.2 innings and allowed six runs on five hits.
Only five Mavs recorded hits in the contest while UTSA connected on 13. The Roadrunners will now face Sam Houston State - 2-1 winner over Stephen F. Austin.
