June 24, 2005
ARLINGTON, Texas - Texas-Arlington junior Dee Jay Nelson was tabbed to the 2005 Hibernia Bank/Southland Conference Softball All-Academic Team, the league office announced Thursday, June 23. Nelson is the lone UTA representative on the squad, joining 10 others from five different institutions.
The all-academic team honors student-athletes who were selected as a national all-academic recipient this year while also earning at least a 3.00 grade point average. Remaining spots on the all-academic teams are then voted on by the head coaches, sports information directors and academic/compliance administrators. Student-athletes must have completed on full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games at the position in which they are nominated.
Nelson started all 43 games for the Lady Mavericks this season, leading the team with three home runs, 22 RBI and a .997 fielding percentage. She played a key role in UTA's fifth-place finish in the SLC with a .238 batting average, third best on the squad. The junior also represented her squad on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and headed the team's efforts for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, the annual canned food drive and the Ronald McDonald pop tab campaign.
Nelson holds a 3.61 GPA as a business major.
