ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington softball begins its 2013 fall season Wednesday as they host Vernon Junior College at 5 p.m. at Allan Saxe Field.
The Mavericks return five starters from their 2013 squad that UT Arlington coach Kristie Fox is counting on to help guide the new members.
"The team is working really hard right now," Fox said. "The upperclassmen have done a really good job of making sure the new people know the expectation here so it's been nice to not have to reiterate it all the time. This really allows us to focus on getting better skill wise. We still have a long way to go, but I like our starting point a lot this year."
UTA will also face Hill Junior College, Temple Junior College and McLennan Junior College throughout October. These next few weeks are crucial for the returners and newcomers.
"I want to see a high energy level and I really want to see our pitchers go out there and compete against some new batters," Fox said. "They've been facing our team multiple times, so it will be nice for them to face someone else.
"I just want them to focus on keeping a high energy. Everybody is going to get a chance to play and prove what they have. It's their time to try to earn a spot."
Creating competition within the team is an important aspect to fall ball.
"The fall is really when people start to stand out," Fox said. "Every day when they come out here, there is an opportunity to earn a position. Any given day anyone can take a spot away, including spring season.
"Just keeping that hard work all the time in the back of their minds, it really helps, and I think that having a bigger roster this year creates that competitive edge."
