ARLINGTON, Texas - The UT Arlington Head Softball coach Deborah Hedrick announced the signing of two standouts to National Letters of Intent (NLI) during the early signing period. Arlington product Whitney Simpson and Texarkana native Lindley Turney will be joining the Mavericks for the 2008 season.
Last season Simpson hit .630 with 10 home runs, 28 RBIs and 39 runs scored. Currently in her senior year at Arlington High School she plays catcher and third base. Whitney has been named the District 7-5A MVP two years running. Her accolades also include Star Telegram Newcomer of the Year as a freshman, first-team all district all three years, all-state first-team as a junior, Star Telegram Super Team's catcher as a sophomore and junior and the Dallas Morning News All-Area Team.
Turney, one of last season's top standouts in the Texarkana area will play shortstop at UTA, batted .621 with 25 doubles, eight triples and two home runs as a junior. All those figures were in the area's top 10 in statistics reported to the Texarkana Gazette. She also had a fielding percentage of .940, and was named Player of the Year by the Gazette's Bowie County Life edition.
Turney, who will likely be Redwater's No. 1 pitcher this spring, was selected as the Redwater Dragons Offensive Player of the Year, first-team all-district and all-area as a short stop as well as Bowie County Life's Player of the Year for 2006. As a sophomore she was named to the All-District and Bowie County Life First-Teams.
The UT Arlington softball team will kick-off its 2007 season at the Wilson/DeMarini Invitational where they will play host University of Houston on Feb. 9 at 4 p.m.
