ARLINGTON, Texas - The University of Texas at Arlington head coach Debbie Nichols-Hedrick has announced the 2004 Lady Maverick Softball schedule. The schedule features home match-ups against top programs such as Baylor, Texas A&M and Houston.

"Once again our schedule will be very competitive. We open up at The University of Texas tournament with Texas being ranked No. 4 in the nation. We will also face No. 14 Oklahoma State and host No. 17 Texas A&M later in the season," said Nichols-Hedrick.

The Lady Mavericks will open the season at the 2004 Texas Invitational Tournament in Austin on Friday, February 8. UTA will face Houston at 3 p.m., followed by a 5 p.m. affair with the nationally ranked Longhorns. The following day the Lady Mavs will take on Southland Conference foe Sam Houston State at 10 a.m.

Baylor will visit Allan Saxe Field for a midweek single game on Tuesday, February 10 when the Lady Mavericks kick off home action. UTA will quickly hit the road again to participate in the UTSA Fast Pitch Express hosted by sister school Texas-San Antonio. The Lady Mavs will meet Missouri-Kansas City, Kansas, Bethune-Cookman, Colorado State and Kentucky in the three-day affair. The following weekend UTA will head up I-35 to first-year program North Texas and play in the innaugural North Texas / Beltin Round-Up. UTA will kick off tournament action against Wichita State before meeting New Mexico, Oklahoma State, Southwest Missouri, Creighton and the host Eagles.

Texas-Arlington will begin the road to defending its SLC title when it opens league play at home on February 24 when McNeese State visits Allan Saxe Field. The Lady Mavericks also have home SLC series against Louisiana-Monroe, Southeastern Louisiana and rival Texas State.

"The Southland Conference will once again be competitive, each program is better and stronger and it will be competitive each and every series, said Nichols-Hedrick. "We are looking forward to a fun and exciting season."
