WT: Mavs fall to No. 30 TCU, 5-2

FORT WORTH, Texas – The UT Arlington women's tennis team opened its 2014 season with a 5-2 loss to No. 30 TCU Saturday afternoon.
"I'm disappointed with the loss, but so proud with the overall team effort," UT Arlington coach Diego Benitez said. "We played against a top team and we played four freshmen, who all played well. We are looking forward to the future, but taking one match at a time."
TCU's Parajova and Tan won the first doubles match for the Frogs with a 6-2 victory over Astrid Gehre and Angeles de los Rios at the No. 2 position. Nichols and Arantekin defeated Elizabeth Toms and Ekaterina Tugarinova 6-1 to put the Mavericks down 1-0 heading into singles competition.
Gehre competed at the No. 4 position in her UTA debut, defeating TCU's Arantekin 6-4, 1-6, 10-6. Jessica Birowski, also competing for the Mavericks for the first time, took down Sirilova 7-5, 1-6, 10-8 to give UTA its second point of the match.
Freshman Angeles de los Rios also pushed her opponent to three sets, but TCU ultimately won the match as the Frogs improved to 2-0 on the season.
The Mavericks are back on the court the court Feb. 1 as they host Midwestern State at 10 a.m. and Tarleton State at 3 p.m. at the UTA Tennis Center.
