HOUSTON, Texas - The University of Texas at Arlington women's tennis squad picked up two wins over the weekend, defeating Alabama-Birmingham, 6-1, and host Houston, 5-2 on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Mavericks improve to 2-1 on the year.

UTA took the doubles point after sweeping doubles action. No. 40 Marketa Cizova and Daniela Novakova defeated Annamieke Elsholz and Sumrin Tanzeem, 8-5, at No. 1 doubles. No. 50 Monika Peciulionyte and Simri van Rooyen handed Femke de Boer and Julia von Samson an 8-1 loss at No. 2 doubles, while Jitka Vetrovcova and Anete Rozkalne picked up an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles.

The Lady Mavericks continued to dominate in singles action as they picked up a victory in five of the six positions. No. 46 Peciulionyte defeated Boer, 6-0, 6-3 at No. 1 singles. Cizova earned a 6-0, 6-2 win over Elsholz in the two hole, while Anete Rozkalne handed Marrit Jansma a 6-1, 6-4 loss at No. 3 singles. Senior Jitka Vetrovcova earned the Lady Mavericks final win, defeating UAB's Nadia Dellarciprete, 7-5, 6-3 at the No. 5 position. Sumrin Tanzeem picked up UAB's lone victory, defeating Gretel Hach, 6-4, 6-0 at the No. 6 position.

That afternoon, UTA handed host Houston its first loss of the season with a 5-2 victory. The Lady Mavericks picked up the doubles point by taking No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, 9-8 (7-3) and 9-8 (7-5), respectively. In singles action, No. 46 Peciulionyte suffered her first loss of the season as Houston's Siljana Dimovska earned a 6-2, 7-5 upset victory at the No. 1 position. Cizova defeated Miranda Foley, 6-3, 7-5 at the No. 2 position, while Novakova edged past Kami Miller, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 at the No. 4 position. Rozkalne fell at the No. 3 position to Houston's Yolandi Terblanche. Rooyen and Vetrovcova closed out the day with straight set victories at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions.

 

 

Texas-Arlington will return to the court February 14 at Oklahoma State.
