HOUSTON, Texas – The UT Arlington women’s tennis team lost 7-0 to No. 32 Rice Saturday in Houston at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium.

The Mavericks fell to 0-2 overall, with one loss at home and one on the road.

Rice’s No. 56 doubles duo, Natalie Beazant and Dominique Harmath, defeated Brook Dennis and Elizabeth Thoms in a quick 8-1 to begin the match. The Owls continued to play well winning the other doubles 8-4 and 8-1, and going on to win the point headed into singles play.

Liuciha Smaizyta was the first of the Mavericks to be defeated, and Rice continued to win matches from there. Dennis put up a tough fight with No. 50 Natalie Beazant, but the Rice sophomore took the match 6-1, 7-5.

Junior Giada D’ortona was the last chance to grab a point for the Mavericks as she pushed her opponent to a tie-breaker, but Kimberly Anicete won 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-3) and Rice shut out the Mavericks in their first road match of the season.

The Mavericks are back on the courts Sunday, Feb. 17 as they take on Air Force at 2 p.m. at the UTA Tennis Center.
