ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington women's tennis fell 4-3 to McNeese State at the UTA Tennis Center on Sunday.
The loss snaps a three-match winning streak for the Mavericks. UT Arlington is 3-2 on the season.
"It was an extremely intense and close match today, as the score shows," UT Arlington coach Diego Benitez said. "In women's singles, every match went three sets, so it could've gone either way.
"We did fight until the end, but the experience was on the other side of the net and we couldn't close the matches that we needed to. I am proud of how we fought and we need to focus on getting ready for next week."
UTA and McNeese State both won three singles matches. Elizabeth Thoms (6-1, 2-6, 10-2), Astrid Gehre (6-3, 3-6, 10-5) and Jessica Birowski (9-6, 7-5, 10-3) each earned singles victories from the No. 2, 4 and 5 slots, respectively, for the Mavericks.
The downfall of the match came for the Mavericks in doubles play. Birowski and Giada D'ortona won 6-2 over McNeese State, but UTA was unable to snag at least one of the other two doubles matches for the victory.
UT Arlington women's tennis returns to action against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Thursday (Feb. 13) at 2 p.m. to close out a five-match homestand.
