Norfolk, VA - The UT Arlington women's tennis team recorded their first win of the season against Old Dominion University, 4-3 in Norfolk, VA Sunday morning.
UT Arlington entered Sunday morning's match up ready to go after falling 4-3 against VCU Saturday.
The Mavericks opened the morning off doubles competition, winning two of three flights and recording the point.
"It was nice for our team to compete against girls out of our Region," said head coach Diego Benitez. "I thought we did a great job adjusting to the indoor conditions and we played aggressive tennis-winning against ODU 4-3. This win was huge especially when we got beaten pretty firmly by then last year."
Giada D'ortona and Linda Aqvist picked up an 8-1 win in the No. 2 position against Margarita Belyakova Nika Khmolovska. Maria Martinez-Romero and Nikola Matovicova kept the wins coming earning a win in the No. 3 position against Diana Ivanova and Juliana Pires, 8-1.
UTA headed into singles action with a 1-0 advantage over the Lady Monarchs and kept the momentum going, winning three of the six flights. The Mavs recorded victories in the No. 3, 4, and 5 positions.
"I was proud the way Maria played this weekend and specially how Natalia raised her level to clinch the last match against ODU," Benitez said.
Martinez-Romero took care of business in the No. 3 spot, earning her second singles win of the season against Pires with scores of 6-0, 6-0.
Mayuk followed in her teammates lead and notched a three-set win over Nika Khmolovska, 7-5, 4-6, and 6-2 while D'ortono earned a 7-6, 6-1 victory against Esnal Olguin.
In the top flight, Negreanu suffered a hard-fought loss to Dobrowolska by scores of 3-6, 6-3, and 6-2 while Aqvist dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision to Ivanova in the No. 2 spot.
Matovicova lost a 6-1, 6-2 decision to Belyakova in the No. 6 flight.
Up next for the Mavericks is a Big 12 match up at Kansas on Friday, February 25. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
