EL PASO - After not being on the court for match since Feb. 9, UT Arlington didn't show any rust in a 4-1 win over UTEP on Friday afternoon at the El Paso Tennis and Swim Club.
The win pushed UTA to 3-2 on the season. The Mavericks had their previous two matches cancelled due to rain, and opened up a weekend in which they will take on Wyoming on Saturday and New Mexico State on Sunday.
"I am very happy with today's result against a good opponent in El Paso," UTA coach Diego Benitez said. "We have had a lot of time in practice without being able to play, and I'm proud of how we came out ready. It was key to get the win in doubles, and we were able to play well in singles to open up the weekend."
With No. 1 doubles locked in a tie at 6-6, it was Momoka Horiguchi and Nanaka Takeuchi to claim the first doubles win at No. 2, taking a 6-4 result. Second later, Almudena Boza and Carla Cerdan Vives clinched the points, also going 6-4.
Agustina Serio made quick work of No. 1 singles to top Lois Wagenvoort 6-1, 6-2. UTA fell in a close second set at No. 3 to bring UTEP within a point, but wins at No. 5 and No. 6 clinched the match.
UTA and Wyoming meet at 1 p.m. CT, also in El Paso, on Saturday.
