No. 34 TULANE TOPS UTA 6-1 IN WOMEN'S TENNIS
March 8, 2003
ARLINGTON, TEXAS...The University of Texas at Arlington's Jitka Vetrovcova picked up a victory in the No. 4 singles position, but that was the Mavericks' lone victory, as Tulane went on to defeat Texas-Arlington 6-1 in a non-conference women's tennis match at the UTA Tennis Center in Arlington Saturday.
The loss drops UTA's record to 1-4 overall. Tulane, ranked 34th in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, improves to 10-1 on the year.
Due to injuries that forced UTA to play with just five players, the Mavericks forfeited their match at the No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles positions.
Already trailing 1-0 before the players hit the court, UTA would pick up just one victory the rest of the way, as Vetrovcova stopped Tulane's Ana Saaibi. Vetrovcova won the first set 7-6, but Saaibi was forced to retire leading 2-1 in the second set.
Tulane swept through the rest of the matches. Jenny Kuhn, the nation's 50th ranked singles player, defeated UTA's Annemarie Lenze 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1 singles. No. 78 Erika Valdes handed UTA's Anete Rozkalne a 6-0, 6-3 loss at No. 2 singles and Maria Ivanov beat the Mavericks' Ella Goldshuv 4-6, 6-3, 10-0 in the third singles position. Lucy Wood of Tulane did not give up a game in defeating UTA's Gretel Hach 6-0, 6-0 in the fifth slot.
With the match already decided by virtue of Tulane winning five of the six singles points, the Green Wave picked up the doubles point by winning both matches that were played. Ivanov and Nancy Kockott handed Lenze and Rozkalne an 8-2 loss while Valdes and Wood defeated Goldshuv and Vetrovcova by an identical 8-2 score.
The Mavericks return to action March 11 at Sam Houston State in the first Southland Conference match of the season.
