WOMEN'S TENNIS TEAM REMAINS PERFECT IN SLC WITH 5-1 WIN OVER SFA
March 15, 2003
ARLINGTON, TEXAS...The University of Texas at Arlington's women's tennis team improved its Southland Conference regular season winning streak to 42 consecutive matches with a 5-1 victory over Stephen F. Austin Saturday at the UTA Tennis Center in Arlington. The victory improved the Mavericks' 2003 record to 3-4 overall and 2-0 in Southland matches.
UTA was again missing a player in its lineup, so the Mavericks were forced to forfeit matches at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles. However, the Mavericks won the rest of the matches that were completed.
The morning started with a pair of doubles victories, giving UTA the doubles point and a 1-0 lead. Annemarie Lenze and Anete Rozkalne teamed to defeat Robin Houston and Gennan Houston 8-1 in the top spot, and Ella Goldshuv and Jitka Vetrovcova topped Melissa Bass and Sandra Wolfe 8-2 at No. 2 doubles. Stephen F. Austin's Christine Huynh and Emily Voss won their match by default.
UTA has not lost a regular season match in Southland Conference play since the turn of the century. The last time the Mavericks lost a conference match during the regular season came April 10, 1998, when Texas-San Antonio defeated UTA 7-2 in the final regular season match of the 1998 season.
UTA will return to action March 19 against Texas Tech at 11 a.m. on March 19 at the UTA Tennis Center.
