March 18, 2011
Arlington, Texas - Due to expected inclement weather on California's central coast this weekend, the No. 66 Mavericks were forced to face No. 59 UC Santa Barbara today, two days prior to their scheduled meeting. UTA made the transition and handed the Gauchos a 6-1 setback Friday afternoon.
"The girls played excellent today and we had a great match," assistant coach Marco Matteucci said. "We got another big match tomorrow and this win should help move us in the national rankings again. From top to bottom we played very well and hopefully the rain will hold off and we can play No. 57 Cal Poly."
UT Arlington started off by winning all three doubles matches and kept the momentum going heading into singles action recording wins in all but one flight.
Daiana Negreanu and Linda Aqvist handed the Gauchos No. 1 doubles team of Natalia Lozano and Jordan Dockendorf an 8-4 setback while Maria Martinez-Romero and Nikola Matovicova recorded an 8-6 victory against Jill Damion and Kiersten Meehan in the No. 2 position.
Easily recording the doubles point, the nationally-ranked Mavericks moved into singles competition where they once again dominated their opponents. UTA recorded wins in the No. 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 singles flights.
Negreanu battled against Lozano at the top position but held her own and recorded a 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (10-4) win. Aqvist picked up an easy 6-4, 6-2 victory in the No. 2 position against Damion.
Martintez-Romero extended her perfect record to 11-0 after her 7-6, 6-3 win against Novak at the No. 3 position. Mayuk won a 6-2, 6-3 decision against Dockendorf in the No. 4.
Junior Katarina Mlcochova was the only Maverick to fall in singles, as she dropped a 6-2, 6-4 decision to Cos in the No. 5 spot.
D'ortona also battled against her opponent Meehan but pulled out the win with a final score of 6-3, 6-7, 1-0 (10-2) in the No. 6 flight.
The victory earned them six straight wins and improved them to 9-2 overall. The Mavs also improved their non-conference record to 5-2. UTA will be back in action tomorrow when they face No. 57 Cal Poly at 9:30 a.m.
