Arlington, Texas—The UT Arlington women’s tennis team lost 4-1 to Denver to open up Western Athletic Conference competition.
The two teams started off fighting with doubles lasting about an hour and a half. The Mavericks won the first match 8-6 at the No. 1 position with Brooke Dennis and Elizabeth Thoms setting UTA up with just one more match to win to get the doubles point.
The Pioneers continued to fight and would win the last two doubles matches to clinch the point and head into singles up 1-0 over the Mavs.
Verena Scott was the lone Maverick to win her singles competition. At the No. 5 spot Scott took down her opponent 6-4, 6-4.
The Mavericks drop to 1-8 overall and 0-1 in league play. UTA will host Idaho and Utah State Saturday, March 23 at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. to continue WAC competition.
