DALLAS - UTA senior Astrid Gehre moved into a tie for second in all-time doubles wins during Saturday's matchup against SMU.
Gehre, winner of 76 matches in her doubles career, tied Marie Stepanova (1998-02) for the second spot in the history books. Gehre holds a 76-40 career record in doubles and is 16-0 this season with freshman Anna Wichert as a teammate. Despite the accolade, UTA was unable to take the overall result, falling 4-3 to the crosstown rival.
The Mustangs tied the match up with a win at No. 2 and took a brief lead at with a straight-set win at No. 1. Jessica Birowski tied things back up with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 4 and Wichert kept things tied with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 win at No. 5 as a pair of matches concluded at the same time.
All eyes then turned to No. 3 with Serio in a fight for the deciding point. Serio took a 7-2 win in the second-set tiebreak and went up 3-2 in the third. However, her opponent battled back with a break and took the third 6-3 to win the match for SMU.
The Mavericks (8-8) closed their road schedule with a 2-4 record away from home, however, play the next three matches at the UTA Tennis Center, beginning with a SBC pod of Louisiana and Texas State next weekend.
