ARLINGTON - Senior Astrid Gehre helped UTA power itself to a sweep on Friday against Louisiana at the UTA Tennis Center.
Gehre, coming into the day tied with Marie Stepanova (1998-02), earned a 6-2 win in No. 2 doubles with partner Anna Wichert to move into sole possession of second in all-time doubles wins, recording her 77th-career victory. The win improved the No. 72-ranked doubles team in the nation to 17-0 this season.
The Mavericks improved to 9-8 overall and 3-0 in Sun Belt play. The 4-0 win helped UTA improve its all time record to 10-3 against the Ragin' Cajuns (8-9, 1-3).
The doubles point was a combined effort with all three UTA teams picking up a win to follow Gehre and Wichert. Angeles de los Rios and Jessica Birowski coasted to a 6-1 win at No. 1, while Valeria Lopez and Agustina Serio edged No. 3 doubles with a 6-4 score.
In singles, the Mavericks carried momentum through their first sets as UTA took all six of the opening games. De los Rios was the first to claim a singles point with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 1 as multiple singles raced to win their match.
Wichert, Cerdan and Birowski all went within a game of claiming their match with the Mavs needing just two more points. Wichert picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 5, while Cerdan followed shortly behind at 6-2, 6-3 on No. 6.
The Mavericks continue action in their home SBC pod on Sunday when they take on Texas State at 11 a.m. UTA is is 19-6 all-time against the Bobcats.
