ARLINGTON - UTA women's tennis completed a perfect weekend in Sun Belt play with a 4-0 sweep of Texas State on Sunday at the UTA Tennis Center.
The Mavericks, also defeating Louisiana in a sweep on Friday, improved to 10-8 overall and completed the SBC portion of their schedule with a 4-0 record. The Mavs host North Texas on April 15 at 2 p.m. in the regular season finale before heading to New Orleans for the conference tournament.
"It was a great match today in very tough elements," UTA coach Diego Benitez said. "I thought the girls played very intense and were able to continue to play big doubles, we were very aggressive in doubles play and brought the momentum into singles. We served very strong on all of the courts and never looked back. I am very proud of the entire effort. It is always a plus to play conference matches at home and it was great to get a couple of wins."
UTA asserted itself in the match from the first serve as it was a pair of wins in doubles to earn the opening point. Agustina Serio and Valeria Lopez coasted to a 6-1 win at No. 3, while No. 72 Astrid Gehre and Anna Wichert improved to 17-0 on the season in doubles with a 6-2 win at No. 2.
Singles play turned into a race to see who would finish first and avoid leaving a match unfinished. Carla Cerdan Vives eased to a 6-1, 6-1 to get the first singles point at No. 6. The win was shortly fallowed by Angeles de los Rios (6-2, 6-2) at No. 1 and Agustina Serio (6-2, 6-0) at No. 2.
UTA improved to 20-7 all-time against the in-state rival.
