NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana – The UT Arlington women's tennis season came to an end Saturday afternoon in a 4-3 loss to South Alabama in the semifinals of the Sun Belt Conference Championship.
After losing the No. 3 doubles match, the Mavericks rallied to win the second two matches to win the doubles point.
Elizabeth Thoms and Angeles de los Rios evened the match with an 8-5 win at the No. 2 doubles spot. Astrid Gehre and Ekaterina Tugarinova defeated USA's Emily Newton and Laura Maduskova to clinch the doubles point for the Mavericks.
Thoms carried her momentum into singles play as she defeated Michaela Meszarosova in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 1 position. Verena Scott fell 6-2, 6-2 against Paula Sanchez at the No. 6 singles spot as the Jaguars won their first match.
De los Rios grabbed the second singles win for the Mavericks, also winning in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 giving UTA a 3-1 lead.
South Alabama made a run as Gehre battled in a 7-5, 7-5 straight-set loss as USA closed the gap 3-2. Jessica Birowski and D’ortona lost to their matches as the Jaguars took the match 4-3.
The Mavericks wrapped up their season with a 12-8 overall record and 1-1 in the SBC Championship.
