SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The UT Arlington women's tennis team dropped a 4-0 decision to top-seed Southeastern Louisiana in the finals of the 2007 Southland Conference Women's Tennis Championship here Monday.
UT Arlington ends the season 15-4 while Southeastern Louisiana (21-2) will advance to the NCAA Regional Tournament at a site to be determined.
"I am extremely proud of this team and the way they fought back all season long," said UT Arlington Head Women's Tennis Coach Diego Benitez. "We played shorthanded all year long and to make it to the finals (of the conference tournament) is a great accomplishment. We didn't know what kind of season we would have when we started in the fall, I think this has been a great season (for the women's team).
"We let them know we have the best tennis program in the conference with our women making the finals and the men in the semifinals. No other school had their teams advance as far."
The match was the final for seniors Simri van Rooyen, Daniela Novakova and Monika Peciulionyte. Peciulionyte played with a nagging back injury throughout the tournament. The back flared up again in the finals against Emilija Amaudovska and she was forced to retire after losing the opening set, 6-3.
SLU led 3-0 after Marissa Brown lost to Bonnie Phillips, 6-4, 6-1 and the Lions closed out the match when Iva Velkovska outlasted Novakova 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 single
The match was resumed after being postpone on Sunday. The Mavs led in two of three doubles points before play was suspended, but SLU came back Monday morning and won the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and 3.
