UTA WOMEN OPEN SLC TOURNAMENT WITH 4-2 WIN OVER LADY DEMONS
April 25, 2003
ARLINGTON, Texas...The University of Texas at Arlington's women's tennis team rebounded after dropping the doubles point to come back and win four singles points and claim a 4-2 victory over Northwestern State in the first round of the Southland Conference Tournament at the UTA Tennis Center in Arlington Friday. The victory improved UTA's overall record to 12-8. Northwestern State built an advantage by winning the doubles point when Anneline Zerwick and Alexandria Nieto teamed to defeat UTA's No. 2 doubles team of Annemarie Lenze and Anete Rozkalne 8-5. UTA's top team of Ella Goldshuv and Jitka Vetrovcova defeated Eliza Young and Katy Wallace 8-3, but UTA was again playing without a No. 3 doubles team and a No. 6 singles player due to injuries. Forfeiting those two matches cost UTA both of Northwestern State's points. The Mavericks dominated singles play, though with the Mavericks winning in each of the top four positions. Lenze, who was named SLC Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year earlier in the day, defeated Young 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 1 position. Goldshuv was on the court for a matter of minutes in her match at No. 2 singles. She led 4-0 in the first set when her opponent, Zerwick, was forced to retire after an injury. Rozkalne, who was honored as the league's Freshman of the Year today, handed Katy Wallace a 6-2, 6-1 loss in the third spot, and Vetrovcova defeated Nieto 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 singles. UTA's Gretel Hach was leading the second set after having won the first set in the No. 5 singles match when UTA scored the winning point.
The Mavericks, the tournament's third seed, will play at 3:30 p.m. Saturday against second-seeded Louisiana-Monroe. UTA's men's team will play its semifinal match against Texas-Pan American at 9:30 a.m. All tournament scores are available online at UTAMavs.com.
