WOMEN'S TENNIS SEASON ENDS WITH FIRST ROUND LOSS TO LAMAR
April 25, 2008
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Mavericks (7-12, 6-5 SLC) were taken out of the SLC Tournament by Lamar (20-2, 10-1 SLC), Friday morning at the Schleif Tennis Complex on the campus of Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches, Texas. The Cardinals defeated UT Arlington, 4-0.
Lamar opened the match by claiming the doubles point when Maria Gutierrez and Manijee Ashrafi combined for an 8-5 win over Daiana Negreanu and Sara Pesic at No. 2 doubles. UTA was forced to concede the doubles point, as it did not have enough players to field three doubles teams.
In singles play Lamar only needed one point to seal the victory with UTA dropping two points from the No. 5 and No. 6 positions by not playing the matches. UTA was leading on courts one through three but at court four, Gutierrez punched the Cardinals ticket to the semi finals with a straight sets victory over Pesic, 6-2, 6-3.
As the No. 1 single, Monika Hadvigerova had won the first set 6-2 and was battling 4-6 with Andrea Martinez when the match was called. Klara Jagosova was up 6-3, 4-4 over Mariaryeni Gutierrez at the two spot and, Negreanu at the No. 3 spot led Kaltrina Harbuzi 6-3, 2-2.
