DENVER, Colo.— The UT Arlington women’s tennis team’s 2013 season came to end Thursday afternoon at the Gates Tennis Center in the quarterfinals of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament.
“This was the toughest loss of the year,” UT Arlington coach Diego Benitez said. “However, I’m so proud of each and every one of our players. They never stopped fighting and always left it all on the court. A new year starts for us right now.”
Idaho jumped out early winning the doubles points. Victoria Lozano and Almindena Sanz defeated Brooke Dennis and Elizabeth Thoms 9-8 (11-9) at the No. 1 doubles spot, wile Rita Bermudez and Beatriz Flores took down UTA’s Katarina Dikosavljevic and Christine Foote 8-3.
Scott continued her winning momentum into singles with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Belen Barcenilla to tie the match 1-1.
Idaho took the next two points at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots to move into the lead, 3-1. Freshman Christine Foot defeated Idaho’s Sophie Vickers 0-6, 6-0, 6-2 to move the Mavs within one, 3-2.
Thoms and D'ortona were the last chance for the Mavericks to stay alive in the postseason. Thoms fell in a hard fought battle 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5) and D'ortona went unfinished as Idaho clinched the match and the Mavericks season ended.
The women completed the 2013 season with an overall record of 7-13 and a Western Athletic Conference record of 6-4. This was the first and the last season for the Mavs in the WAC, as they head into the Sun Belt Conference next season.
